Are Brown Recluse Spiders Hiding in Your Home?

How much do you know about the brown recluse spider? How reclusive are they, do you think?

indianapolis

Let me be totally honest about that title question up there. Brown recluse spiders don't hide from us anymore. They're rather brazen these days, and weave their webs right out in the open.

INDIANAPOLIS

Back when I first started working as a pest control technician I knew absolutely zero about brown recluse spiders other than the fact that they carried a fiddle shaped marking on their back.

I didn't know a brown recluse spider from a violin.

I asked the company entomologist if brown recluse spiders lived in the Indianapolis area, because news articles said they only lived in southwestern states. But sometimes I don't trust the news media all that much.

That bug guy told me that he'd found a few recluse spiders, but only in the basements of the city's larger buildings, and even then only in very dark corners where people hardly ever went.

I took him for his word, and, since part of my job as a pest tech included visiting those very dark corners I looked at some pictures of brown recluse trying to familiarize my brain with what they look like.

Wasn't long before I realized those picture studies were well worth the effort - and that sudden realization came not in a deep, dark corner, but in a brightly lit, well traveled area.

Many warehouses have rodent problems, and to keep the mouse population down we used cardboard boxes with little round holes through their ends. Inside those bait boxes (that's what we called them) we put a glue board, laying flat, or a couple blocks of mouse poison.

One day I serviced the warehouse of a major Indianapolis hospital. This particular building housed all of the hospital's stored paper medical records and patient charts. The workers in the warehouse organized the records, filed them on stacks of shelves that covered the warehouse floor, and pulled records back out when doctors or nurses requested to see them.

I walked up the loading dock stairs, through the door into the warehouse, and picked up a bait box that sat on the floor next to that door. I opened the box up, and movement caught my eye. As my vision focused in on the source of that movement a clanging bell sound set off in my head.

...I dropped that box and jumped away from it just as fast as I jumped out of that old corvette I owned every time I failed to step far enough away from the door as I got out of the car - and my leg touched against the hot side pipe.

That movement was a brown recluse spider, my subconscious recognized it, and warned me to get away, even though my conscious mind took its time realizing what I looked at.

I got out a glue board, put it into the box, coaxed that spider onto the board, trapping the spider, and as I did another recluse jumped out at me from behind the bait block.

I captured the second spider too.

I didn't see my life pass before my eyes that day. But I did check my pants to make sure they were still clean.

Since then I found brown recluse in my bathroom, and in my office. Only because I studied those pictures when I first became a pest control technician can I recognize these spiders as recluse. Even then I only suspect, not until I see that fiddle shape am I truly sure. Of course, if you get close enough to see that violin while this spider is living, you're way too close.

That warehouse visit was the moment when I understood that brown recluse spiders aren't really all that reclusive.

What Tickets To Purchase For The Brickyard 400

WHAT TO PURCHASE: There are a lot of seating options at the Brickyard 400. With more than 250,000 reserved seats, this event has been billed as the second largest single day sporting event in the world. We will break your options down to 4 main categories. Great seats, Good seats, Average seats, and Seats you'll want to upgrade next year. Remember, unlike the Indianapolis 500, there is no infield seating for the Brickyard 400.

indianapolis 500 hats

GREAT SEATS: While this is always somewhat subjective we think it's fair to say that great seats offer a view of at least one straightway and three turns. The Holy Grail for great seats is in the Penthouse of Grandstand E, box 7 or boxes adjacent. You can see the view from these seats on our set photos page. These seats offer a view of turn 4, the front straightaway, turn 1 and turn 2 as well as the start-finish line and the pits. These seats are also under roof and have backs on the seats. If you have these tickets and you want to sell them, please call us.

INDIANAPOLIS

A similar view can be seen from seats high in the other turns around the speedway. Turn 3 offers a similar view if you find a seat high enough in the apex. We would suggest double letter rows in Sections 12, 13, and 14. You can see the view from these seats on our seat photos page. Unlike the premium turn one seats we described above, these seats are not under roof and have no backs to the seats, but for a nominal charge you may rent seat backs on your way to the grandstands.

GOOD SEATS: We would define good seats as any seat that offers a relatively unobstructed view of at least one turn and a straightaway or two turns and a short chute (the small stretch between turns 1 and 2 or turns 3 and 4). You are more likely to find these seats in double letter rows of the following grandstands. Northeast Vista, North Vista, Northwest Vista, Grandstand J, Penthouse Paddock, Penthouse A, Penthouse B, Southwest Vista, South East Vista. You can see the view from these grandstands on our seat photos page. All penthouse seats have backs on the seats and are sheltered with a roof. All other grandstands listed here have no backs on the seats and are not sheltered with any roof.

AVERAGE SEATS: We would define average seats as any seat that provides you enough of a view to see the cars clearly for some distance on the track. This may be part of the straightaway and part of a turn or most of a turn and part of the short chute and the seats would generally be midway up in the grandstand. Typically you would need to be above row J or K before you have an average view.

SEATS YOU'LL WANT TO UPGRADE: As much as it pains us to admit it, there are some seats at the speedway that don't offer a good view at all. These seats are typically down close to the track. Looking down the straightaway to your right or left causes the safety fence to become more and more of an obstacle the further you gaze into the distance. The only thing positive we can say about these seats is that sitting close to the track gives you an amazing sense of speed as cars come rushing by you so incredibly close. Make sure your life insurance is paid up before you go, because your ticket constitutes a complete release of the speedway for any and all liability. If your seats are on the front row, we would suggest you wear an aviator's cap and goggles.

The Upper Lip Lift - Shortening a Long Upper Lift Without Complications

The upper lip may get longer as one ages in some people. For others, they have a naturally long upper lip when gets more so with age. A long upper lip associated with a thin vermilion can be cosmetically treated through skin removal.

indianapolis 500 evolution

One option for shortening a long upper lip is a lip lift. With this technique, the skin is taken high up under the nose and the upper lip skin is shortened as the remaining skin is pulled upwards. This will leave a residual fine line scar along the base of the nose and only the central lip will have more fullness or pout. It is always slightly over-corrected as there will be some relaxation (mild re-lengthening) of the upper lip afterwords.

INDIANAPOLIS

While this is a fairly simple procedure, complications have been reported from it. One complication appears to come from sewing the underlying orbicularis oris muscle up as well as the skin, presumably for better long-term stability. However, such a maneuver creates an unnatural stiffness and deformity of the upper lip as the orbicular muscle is somewhat restricted from acting like its natural sphincter. It is far better to run the inconsequential risk of doing a secondary tuck-up of the procedure if there has been some relapse.

Abnormal scarring has also been reported. This appears to come from an effort to hide the scars inside the nostrils. This sounds theoretically beneficial but that causes distortion of the nostril sill and enlargement of the nostril opening. Secondary correction of the nostril is difficult. This is not a good trade-off given that subnasal scars generally heal quite well.

Changes in the shape of the nostril can be caused by being pulled downward from removing too much skin (a few extra millimeters is all that it takes) underneath the nostril. This is why the cutout is wavy or bullhorn-shaped with the greatest amount taken centrally between the philtrums. Since skin can not be replaced, secondary correction can be attempted by a modification of the inner alar wedge technique.

Upper lip lifts can be a very satisfying procedure but it is important to not try and take too much skin or do modifications of the procedure that interfere with the natural nostril sill. In my Indianapolis plastic surgery practice, I take a central 4 -5 mms of skin removal whose pattern tapers out to the lateral alar rim. This approach produces consistent results with negligible risks of any of the aforementioned complications.

Track Running Events

Track & Field is composed of three sections: throwing, jumping, and running events. There are dozens of events encompassing the three sections. The throwing and jumping events are done on the grass field within the track which is used for most running events. Running events vary greatly from one another, with some races as short as 100 meters and others taking to the streets for a full 26.2 mile marathon. With the exception of races over 10k, which are held on the road, all races take place on the 400 meter, 8-lane ovular track.

indianapolis motor speedway

The speed races are called dashes or sprints. Though all races are for speed, the so-called speed races are preformed at all out sprints, which cannot be maintained over longer distances. Competitors race in the 100 meter dash and 200 and 400 meter sprints. Competitors often run in all three, but it is rare for a track athlete to run in both sprint and distance competitions, as the muscles used are different in the two styles of running.

INDIANAPOLIS

The 400 meter, 800 meter, 1600 meter (1 mile), and 3200 meter races represent the mid-length races, and there are also longer 5 and 10k track races. In indoor track competitions, the 100 meter dash is often cut to only 60 meters, though all other races maintain the same distance on indoor and outdoor tracks.

In addition to standard running competitions, there are also hurdles races. Men run 110 and 400 meter courses, and women participate in 100 meter hurdles races.

The final style of competition on the track is the relay race. In both the 4x400 and 4x1600 meter relays one participant runs a quarter of the total distance (either 400 or 1600 meters) before passing the baton to the next runner. Instead of getting points for each pass off, what's important is who finishes the race first.

Muscle Weakening Injections - The Bruxism Cure

Bruxism is a common orofacial problem, which affects a large number of people all around the world. It presents as chronic teeth clenching, grinding, and temporal headaches. While not yet widely recognized or employed by most dentists, bruxism can be successfully with Botox injections.

indianapolis 500 hats

I have found Botox to be tremendously effective at masseter muscle hypertrophy and symptomatic teeth clenching. Bruxism or chronic grinding of teeth can cause the jaw muscles to become stronger and achieve a square shape, while simultaneously causing damage to the back premolar and molar teeth. While dental splints and appliances are the standard of care currently, they do not treat the source of the problem (muscle) but rather are primarily protective of ongoing damage to the teeth. Conversely, Botox achieves muscle relaxation or stops muscle spasm which are triggered by the muscles of the jaw.

INDIANAPOLIS

The part of the masseter muscle that is injected is the lower part which is easy to feel bulging when one clenches. This is in front of the parotid gland and above where the marginal mandibular nerve passes along the lower jawline. It is essentially at the jaw angle area. While other parts of the masseter muscle can be injected, this lower area is the easiest with essentially no risk of any complications. By using a very small 30 gauge long needle and a 1cc syringe, Botox can be near painlessly injected in multiple areas of the bulging muscle.

Many people have a symptomatic facial side, and often that side is visibly larger than the non-or less symptomatic side. In these patients, I will inject only the larger side with about 25 units. When both sides are involved, I will put more on the larger side. On average, it takes about 25 units per side injected into the thickest and most protruding masseter muscle. (when the patient clenches) At a cost of around to per unit, cost estimates per side would be about 0. Botox will not work immediately, on average it takes 3 to 5 days to begin working.

Most patients that I have treated get significant relief with Botox injections. For some, it is a complete 'cure' (albeit temporary) and for others it is about reduction in their symptoms. I have yet to see a a patient who gets no relief with an identified large masseter muscle bulging. Pain and clenching relief will last around 4 months which is typical for how long Botox lasts in the face for expression reduction. Interestingly, one will usually see the size of the muscle reduce over time, often within the first treatment cycle. While not fully explained, this muscle shrinking is seen consistently.

How long does one need Botox for clenching symptom relief? That is going to vary per each patient. Some may only need one or two treatments and then the cycle is broken. Others may need consistent treatment every 4 months for a year or two. It is not possible to predict for anyone how long one may need or want this injection therapy.
