The PHR exam is a four-hour, 225 multiple-choice question ordeal that can either result in successful certification, or extreme disappointment for test takers. The test can be difficult, even for those with years of professional level experience in human resources, as it focuses on both the practical application of human resources knowledge as well as the theoretical knowledge of the HR practice.

Offered through HRCI, the Human Resources Certification Institute, the PHR is a momentous exam, pulling knowledge from a wide array of Human Resources related activities and areas to establish the test taker's mastery of the entire profession. Many HR practitioners are familiar with the basic tenants of Human Resources. Many others serve within a focused capacity in their profession, as specialists, managers, coordinators, and administrators within a particular specialized HR function.

This type of specialization can be very rewarding for an individual in their career. It can certainly empower one's career path. It rarely makes HR professionals immediately prepared for sitting for the PHR exam however.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in conjunction with HRCI understands that even seasoned HR professionals may require preparation for successful completion of the PHR examination. As such, HRCI offers "Start Smart," a PHR prep course to assist in adequately and comprehensively reviewing the materials necessary for successful completion of the PHR exam.

The Start Smart course is offered through state and local Human Resources organizations, colleges and universities, and study groups through the United States. The course is designed to delve into each of the HRCI Body of Knowledge functional areas which will be included on the PHR examination.

There are six areas included in HRCI Body of Knowledge, and by the end of the classes, participants will have reviewed the finer points of each. Following completion of the class, HR professionals will have a better understanding of their own preparedness for the PHR exam.

PHR classes allow HR professionals to identify their strong suits and the areas in which they may require additional study and preparation in order to successfully pass the PHR examination. Knowing one's areas of strength and weakness within the testing materials will allow for more focused further preparation, and a greater overall chance of success in passing the examination and achieving certification.

Most PHR classes meet once per week, in three to four hour increments. Classes span over the period of six or more weeks, and many organizations offer intensive coursework with classes, including facilitator lead class room lectures and discussions, workbooks and other course learning materials to supplement the HRCI materials, and practice examinations.
