Indianapolis Semi-Pro Football Team Wins National Championship

The Hoosier Hurricanes invaded Homestead, Florida for last weekend's 4th annual Minor League Football News (MLFN) Super Football Weekend strong winded and left with reign.

In a game dominated by defense, the Hurricanes hammered the Carolina Express 41-0 to win MLFN's AA National Championship.

INDIANAPOLIS

"To reach this point so quickly is incredible," said Hurricanes head coach John Starlin. "I really feel like a proud father to all of those guys."

While the 'Canes' offense was strong, the play of their defense was dominant. The 'Canes forced eight turnovers and controlled the Express' offense, which towered over them in size and power. Early in the contest, it looked like the Express were going to use their Power I offensive attack to run right down the throat of the 'Canes' defense. When the Express were forced to throw, however, the speedy Hurricane secondary was able to take the game away. The first of four Express interceptions was thrown on that opening drive, and the Hurricanes never looked back.

"They were a tough team to scout, but I really think they underestimated our speed," said Starlin. "Other coaches from their league were able to help me out as far as scouting, but I knew as solid as our defense was that we could play with anybody."

Staying with the defensive theme of the game, linebacker Deon Smith was awarded the game's MVP for his 12 tackle performance. He also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble.

The AA national title was the perfect end to a season that was already storybook for the Indianapolis squad, founded by co-owners Starlin, David Day, and NFL wide receiver Reggie Wayne. In their first year of existence, the Hurricanes were awarded Best New Team in the Midwest by MLFN after finishing 13-1 in the Ohio Valley Football League (OVFL). Their OVFL season finished with a Super Bowl victory over the Charlotte (MI) Roughriders, 21-0.

"This has really been a dream season for us," said Starlin.

Starlin's players have also won numerous accolades from MLFN. Four 'Canes were honored with Midwest All-American status: Derrick Ellis was an honorable mention Midwest All-American at running back, wide receiver Scott Penick made second team Midwest All-American, and Corey Crumpton and Charles Avant were first and second team at defensive back, respectively.

Ellis, a former "Mr. Indiana" while playing running back in high school, was also named Running Back of the Year in the Midwest Region by MLFN.

The Hurricanes will return to the OVFL next season and compete to become the first ever back-to-back champion in league history, a feat no team has accomplished in 40 years of competition.

"We are trying to develop something special here," said Starlin.

It certainly looks like the Hurricanes are off to a roaring start.

Waivers Create Conflict in Indianapolis Schools

Indianapolis Schools face the same challenges as most of the nation's urban schools: lack of resources and funding, high poverty levels, and increasing pressure to meet testing standards. The 2001 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act that required all states to have all students to proficient levels in state tests by 2014 was created to raise national standards and demand accountability. No one in Indianapolis Schools is surprised that meeting those standards is proving to be a challenge. That's the whole point.

While educators and parents in Indianapolis Schools are divided in their support for NCLB, and testing in general, the recent use of waivers for graduation has created more than its expected amount of tension. Here's the issue. Indianapolis Schools, along with all other public districts in the state, test children using the Indiana Statewide Test for Educational Practice (ISTEP) exams. In order to graduate, Indianapolis Schools' seniors must pass the Graduation Qualification Examination (GQE). The students are given five chances to pass the test, and it is designed to test mainly eighth and ninth grade knowledge. Sound reasonable right?

CNA CLASSES IN INDIANAPOLIS

That's why a recent Indianapolis Star editorial blasted Indianapolis Schools for what it called, "failing in its job of providing a rigorous education for all students", based on reports that 17% of students graduated with waivers and had not passed the GQE. The angry responses generated by parents of Indianapolis Schools' students were surprising.

But is the backlash based on anything more than a few miffed moms? Here's the rest of the story. Every single student in Indianapolis Schools is required to take the ISTEP and the GQE in order to graduate. This includes students with special needs, like autism, who have specialized individual educational plans (IEPS) to measure their success. Indianapolis Schools' parents and educators are furious that a child could meet all the requirements of an IEP, bring home great report cards, and still not be issued a diploma.

The other area of controversy is in testing students who do not have English as their primary language. Should they be denied an Indianapolis Schools' diploma if their grasp of core subjects in their native language is solid? The tests (in every subject) are only given in English. While this spurs national debate, no one in Indianapolis Schools really seems comfortable with denying students with disabilities diplomas. But the desire to uphold strict standards has some Indianapolis Schools' supporters fearful of lowering accountability measures.

The Indianapolis Star opinion cited above expresses concerns that waivers will "undermine the value of a high school diploma." It points out schools like Frankfort where 14% of seniors repeatedly failed the exam. The 17% waiver rate puts Indianapolis Schools three times higher than the state average for granting waivers. Indianapolis Schools need to look at the numbers and determine exactly how many waivers are granted for legitimate reasons, and how many are just glossing over standards. But defining those terms, and coming up with just solutions, is likely to spur more heated debate in Indianapolis Schools in the upcoming year.

Views From Brickyard 400 Seats At The Indianapolis Motor Speedway

FRONT STRAIGHTAWAY: This is the second part of a four part series providing information about seating views around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With more than 257,000 seats, the world's most famous race track offers a huge selection of seating options. The front straightaway of the speedway consists of two large infield grandstands and 7 grandstands on the outside of the front straightaway, three of which have penthouse seating on the upper deck. The views available from grandstands along the front straightaway are described below.

indianapolis 500 evolution

GRANDSTAND J: On the outside of the front straightaway just at the exit of turn 4, you will find Grandstand J. The seats in this grandstand are bench seats with no back and the grandstand has no roof covering it. As is true with most seating selections at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the best views of the track are found up high in this grandstand in the double letter rows. Fans sitting up high in this grandstand can see turn 1, the pits, the start/finish line, the front straight away, turn 4, the short chute and part of turn 3. The safety fence tends to obstruct the view of the track for fans sitting down near it, but to some extent, they can still see turn 1, the pits, the front straightaway, turn 4, the short chute and part of turn 3.

INDIANAPOLIS

GRANDSTAND H: Grandstand H sits next to Grandstand J. It is approximately 100 yards farther south of turn 4 than Grandstand J, but otherwise offers similar views of the track. The seats in this grandstand are bench seats with no back and the grandstand has no roof covering it. As is true with most seating selections at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the best views of the track are found up high in this grandstand in the double letter rows. Fans sitting up high in this grandstand can see the turn 4, the entrants to the pits, and the entire front straightaway. The safety fence tends to obstruct the view of the track for fans sitting down near the track to some extent, but the straightaway, pits, and turn 4 are still visible.

GRANDSTAND C: This grandstand is located on the outside of the front straightaway between Grandstand H and the Paddock. The seats in this grandstand are bench seats with backs and the grandstand partially covered by a roof. Seats closest to the track are not under roof. Seats high in this grandstand offer a better view of the front straightaway than seats down closer to the track but the vertical support beams that support the VIP Suites located above, partially obstruct the view as you look down the straightaway to your left and right. Down closer to the track the vertical steel beam supports do not come into play, but the safety fence will. This grandstand offers good views of the north end of the pits.

PADDOCK: This grandstand sits on the outside of the track. It occupies the largest section of the front straightaway and straddles the start/finish line. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is partially covered. The box seats closest to the track are not under cover. Seats high in this grandstand offer better views of the front straightaway than seats down close to the track. Fans will experience some minimal obstruction to their view of the track caused by vertical steel support posts for the Penthouse seating above. Seats closer to the track are not obstructed by the vertical support beams, but do suffer from partial obstruction from the safety fence. The seats in this section sit directly across from the pits. It is possible to see turn four and turn 1 from these seats, although the view is from a considerable distance.

PADDOCK PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway and occupies the largest section of the front straightaway and straddles the start/finish line. It also sits on top of the Paddock and offers more expansive views of the track. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is covered with a roof. From these seats it is possible to see turn 1, the front straightaway, the pits, the start /finish line and turn four. Due mostly to the elevated vantage point, the views in this grandstand are considered by most to be very good.

GRANDSTAND A: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near, but not in, turn 1. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is partially covered. The box seats closest to the track are not under cover. You can generally see the entire front straightaway from these seats, as well as, turn 1, the pits, the start/finish line and turn 4. Vertical support beams obstruct some of the views in the upper rows of this grandstand.

GRANDSTAND A PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near, but not in, turn 1. This grandstand sits on top of Grandstand A and offers expansive views of the track. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is covered with a roof. The views from the penthouse seats are considered very good. It is possible to see turn one, the entire front straightaway, the start/finish line, the pits, turn 4 and the short chute at the south end of the track from these seats.

GRANDSTAND B: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near, but not in, turn 1. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is partially covered. The box seats closest to the track are not under cover. Seats up high offer a view of the entire front straightaway. There is some vertical support beam obstruction. There is no vertical support beam view obstruction in the seats down closer to the track, but the safety fence obstructs the views of the straightaway the farther down the track you look.

GRANDSTAND B PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near, but not in turn 1. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is covered with a roof. This grandstand offers expansive views of the track. The view from these seats is generally considered excellent. You can see turn 4, the entire front straightway, the pits, the start/finish line, turn 1, the short chute and turn 2 from these seats.

GRANDSTAND E: This grandstand sits on the outside of the track and occupies most of the 1st turn. The seats in this section have backs on them and this grandstand is partially covered with a roof. The views from this grandstand are best in the double letter rows. Because the seats in this section conform with the turn, there can be a big disparity between views depending upon which section you happen to be sitting in. The apex of the turn is close to section 9. Sections in grandstand past 9 (increasing) will begin to lose sight of the front straightaway.

GRANDSTAND E PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the track and occupies most of the first turn. It also sits on top of Grandstand E. This grandstand offers expansive views of the track. The seats in this section have backs on them and this grandstand is covered with a roof. If you're looking for the best seats at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this is where you need to look. Grandstand E Penthouse, Box 7 row A is the best view of the track. From these seats you can see turn four, the front straightaway as it head directly toward you, the pits, the start/finish line, turn 1, the short chute and turn two. These seats rarely come up for purchase anywhere, because the people who have the reservation rights renew them every year. They have been doing so for years and even if they don't use them, they generally get passed down to friends or family members. Still, if you happen to run across tickets in this section, you will be well advised to buy them, even if you have to mortgage the house.

Generally, there is a higher demand for seats along the front straightaway, over seats in the third turn, second turn and backstretch, because the race begins and ends there, the celebration to start and celebrate the victory happens there, and all the exciting action in the pits happens there. Tickets in these grandstands sell for a premium. It may be possible to purchase tickets for seats with better views of the track in turns 2 and three, but you will sacrifice the views of the pits and start/finish line pageantry. Parts 3 and 4 of this series will cover the south end of the track and the infield seating, respectively.

The Latest Indianapolis Colts Jerseys

The Indianapolis Colts play in the South Division of the AFC. Originally the team was based out of Baltimore and won a number of NFL Championships, including the fifth Super bowl. It was in 1984 that the complete club and team shifted to Indianapolis. If you are a devoted follower then you will want to be sure that you wear the latest Indianapolis Colts jerseys on match days.

indianapolis

The history of the club since the move to Indianapolis has been chequered. Their finest hour was definitely the victory in the Super Bowl against the Chicago Bears in 2006. This is a game that is still talked about excitedly by the club's die hard fans. Between 1984 and 1997 the Indianapolis colts won ninety out of two hundred and twenty eight games, five of which were playoffs. The Colts have recorded a few of the NFLs firsts, for example they were the first ever team to win at least twelve games in six consecutive seasons.

INDIANAPOLIS

Another interesting fact is that the Colts hold the claim to fame for being the first team to defeat all the other NFL teams. Also they were the first club to feature cheerleaders as well as a marching band! The events off the pitch have also had a dramatic impact on the clubs standing. Over the decades there have been seasons of terrible results, for example in 1991; and sadly even the murder of a player Shane Curry in 1992. The disputes over location and ownership have also had a massive bearing on the club's performances and status.

Unusually, the Indianapolis colt's logo and colors have not changed since the team's inception back in 1953. Their white and blue colors have stayed consistent. The latest kit incorporates a blue jersey with white stripes on the shoulders or the alternative uniform of a white jersey with blue stripes. The pants have changed in design over the decades, today they are white with blue stripes down the side though previously they wore grey pants.

In 1995 the team wore blue pants for a few games but then this was not so popular with the fans so the switch was made back to the blue color. The main difference that has been made to the jerseys over the years is slight modifications to the stripes and accents.

When choosing an Indianapolis Colts jersey you should think about which players name you want to have splashed across the back. A popular choice is Peytin Manning who successfully broke the club's long standing record for touchdown passes.

To be successful in the NFL today takes more than just good players. It is no surprise to discover that it is the most supported clubs that have reached the greatest number of super bowl finals.

With the team having been strengthened over the last twelve months with a selection of talented young players maybe this is the time when the Colts can once again lift the Super Bowl. If they do then their jerseys will become a more common sight around the country.

Indianapolis Property Management Heating Up

A slow housing market generally creates more demand for Property Management companies. In today's climate, Sellers have seen their equity shrink while Buyers are facing more stringent borrowing requirements. As a result, more Sellers now lease their homes and more would-be, first-time home buyers are now forced to rent.

indianapolis 500 evolution

Indianapolis, while experiencing less housing problems than coastal cities, has no doubt been affected by the overall housing market. Property Management companies throughout the country and throughout Central Indiana, have received a definite up-tick in business over the past two years. The stream of business comes from two very different sources.

INDIANAPOLIS

Homeowners who can't sell their home

Let's face it... it's a tough market out there for homeowners looking to sell their home. Some homes have been on the market for over a year, while some homeowners haven't even tried to sell their home because they can't afford to bring money to the closing table. The homeowner looks for a good Property Management company to lease and manage their property in hopes that the housing market will return to normal in the next few years. These homes are typically newer and are in subdivisions that have seen heavy pricing pressure over the past few years.

Investors looking for low barriers to entry

Recently, Money Magazine deemed Indianapolis the best place for real estate investors to spend their money, claiming a whopping 300% return on their investment over a 10-year period. We work with some investors but not all. For example... It's no secret that Indianapolis provides investors with extraordinary low barriers to entry. Investors routinely come to Indianapolis, purchase a property for around ,000, spend another ,000 on paint and carpet and rent the home. I consider these purchases to be very bad investments. Generally, these homes will see very little to no appreciation, will need constant maintenance and, because of the areas where they reside, will experience extremely high turnover and even vandalism.

On the other hand, real estate investors who focus on solid neighborhoods and are willing to pay for quality housing are on the right track. While these homes may need some work, they are generally very sound from mechanical and structural standpoints. More importantly, there is a strong demand by Tenants for quality housing in quality areas, so vacancy rates are generally very low. These investors are buying homes at a discounted rate and hope they will achieve large equity gains when the market returns to normal levels.

2008 Indianapolis Colts Outlook

The Indianapolis Colts have come a long way since the days of the Dallas Texans-so much in fact, that the NFL insists the two teams should not be associated today. (Probably due to confusion that results from the Houston Texans) The Colts have created their own legends since 1953 when they renamed to the Baltimore Colts, and have gone on to win three NFL championships and two Super Bowl championships, the latest win in 2006 at XLI. The Indianapolis Colts' chances in 2008 remain promising, especially considering last year's final score of 13-3. The Colts performed very well but lost their divisional round to the San Diego Chargers at the playoffs. Now as the team heads into their 56th season it may be payback time, especially when they play the Chargers in a rematch on November 23, 2008.

indianapolis 500 evolution

For the first time in 24 seasons, the Colts will start playing from the Lucas Oil Stadium leaving behind the RCA Dome. Management is satisfied with coach Tony Dungy for this season, just as they have been for the past seven, and similarly pleased with quarterback Peyton Manning, who returns as starting quarterback for the 11th season. This may or may not be Tony Dungy's last season, as he announced he would return for at least one more season. Whether or not we see him next year may well depend on the team's final score in 2008. The Colts also promoted Jim Caldwell to Associate Head Coach, which puts him in line to inherit Tony Dungy's spot whenever he decides to retire.

INDIANAPOLIS

The team released three players including wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe, defensive tackle Anthony McFarland and linebacker Rob Morris. The team also lost Rocky Michael Boiman and Dan Klecko to the Philadelphia Eagles, Jake Scott to the Tennessee Titans and Benjamin Jeffrey Utecht to the Cincinnati Bengals. The NFL Draft also provided Indianapolis with some exciting new prospects. The team gained center Mike Pollak from Arizona State, linebacker Philip Wheeler from Georgia Tech, tight end Jacob Tamme from Kentucky, linebacker Marcus Howard from Georgia, tight end Tom Santi from Virginia, center Steve Justice from Wake Forest, running back Mike Hart from Michigan, wide receiver Pierre Garcon from Mount Union and center Jamey Richard from Buffalo.

Reaction to the Indianapolis Colts in 2008 has been mixed. Their rematch with the San Diego Chargers is gathering a great deal of interest, though most NFL fans are leaning towards the Colts. The Chargers are seen as a wildcard victor, and respected by most football experts who name them as one of the most talented teams in the entire NFL. In fact, last year's losing performance of 13-3 was one of the best in the entire sport, second only to New England's attempted record breaking best 18-0, and Dallas's impressive 13-3.

Don't count the Colts out yet; they dominated the NFL in 2006, winning their fifth overall championship title and earned one of the best records in the league for the season following. The Colts may still be hungry for more pigskin glory.

Indianapolis Schools Set Dress Codes

indianapolis 500 evolution

Students at Indianapolis schools this year have to get used to leaving many of their personal preferences at home. The school district, the largest in the state, has laid down a set of rules that govern the way students dress when they come to class. The new dress requirement at Indianapolis schools touches almost every item of clothing a student could be wearing from shirts, pants and skirts to belts and shoes, and even under garments. Under the new dress code students in Indianapolis schools will attend class wearing only solid colored shirts paired with tan, black or navy pants and skirts. Undershirts that are the wrong color or shirts that are not tucked in neatly are strict no nos according to the new regulations. That symbol of youth rebellion, the low slung pair of pants sagging to dangerous depths has also been completely ruled out as part of the new dress code at Indianapolis schools.

INDIANAPOLIS

Indianapolis Schools Aim to Dress for Success

The new dress code regulations at Indianapolis schools are an attempt to improve the image of the school district. Superintendent Eugene White says the new dress code will change the perception of Indianapolis schools into an image of a school district that expects excellence. He says the new dress regulations will affect changes in the way Indianapolis schools look, act and teach. Although there haven't been any major studies that show that having a uniform dress code can impact academic excellence, Indianapolis schools have decided that this is a small step towards fostering an improved learning environment in schools. And one has to agree. Schools places to foster learning and build character; this focus is shifted when teenagers walk around with ridiculous clothing that aims to grab attention by any means possible. A dress code prevents distractions in classes and also eliminates any class distinctions that may arise because of the way a student dresses.

Predictably enough, the new dress code has students upset. Many students are of the opinion that some of the regulations border on the ridiculous. One student claims she was asked to go home because her jacket did not match her pants. Students at some school like Tech High School have been particularly prone to discipline action on account of dress code violations. Critics of the system say the code is more difficult to enforce in places like Tech High School because of the sheer numbers of students and the difficulty in monitoring their clothes. Others say suspending students in the Indianapolis Schools for dress code violations doesn't help make them better students. These seem to be minor glitches in a system that's still new and in the process of being tested. Once these road bumps are smoothed out, Indianapolis schools might find they have improved their image at least in terms of developing a pro learning environment in their campuses.

A History of the Indianapolis 500 Owners

There are only three sports, bull fighting, motor racing, and mountain climbing; everything else is just a game. While historians may argue whether this famous quote should be attributed to author, Earnest Hemingway or his contemporary, Barnaby Conrad, it is difficult to ignore the truth in its message. The truth is that competitors who gamble their lives to compete deserve some extra measure of respect. It is fitting that we acknowledge this very important distinction in honor of those who ante up.

indianapolis 500 evolution

For more than 100 years drivers from around the world have come to Indianapolis to test themselves and their machines. There is no place on earth that gives more in triumph and takes more in tragedy than the two and a half mile oval at Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway turns dreams into legends. None of that, however, would be possible without the loyal and fanatical support of the spectators who come each year to witness the greatest spectacle in racing.

INDIANAPOLIS

The Indianapolis 500 mile race is the largest one day sporting event in the world. Attendance, which has never been officially published, is currently estimated at nearly 400,000 thrill-seeking spectators. There are no contenders for this throne. The Indy 500 is the undisputed king of motor sport races. Fittingly, its history is equally astonishing.

THE FOUNDING FATHERS
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the brain child of an energetic entrepreneur named Carl Fisher. Born in Greensburg, Indiana in 1874, Carl grew up in a broken home of modest means. After dropping out of school at the age of 12 to help support his mother and two brothers, he held several menial jobs before opening his own business at the age of 17. His entrepreneurship began with a bicycle shop he opened in Indianapolis with his two brothers in 1891. The bicycle shop became highly successful due in large part to Carl's talent for outlandish promotion. He soon steered his partners into the automobile business by turning the bicycle shop into what is believed to be the first automobile dealership in the United States.

When approached by an inventor of an acetylene lamp for use on automobiles, Carl Fisher seized the opportunity to begin manufacturing head lights for the auto industry and through a series of plants around the country supplied the headlights for most every automobile and truck made in America.

Carl Fisher's dealership sold, Oldsmobile, Packard, Stutz, and the Stoddard-Dayton automobiles. On a trip to Europe in 1909 or shortly prior thereto, Carl discovered the European automobile manufacturers were building superior automobiles. He took a special interest in a large automobile test track he visited in Surrey England and came back home with plans to build one himself.

Carl was well on his way to becoming a wealthy man by this time. He had several successful ventures including a company which manufactured the Prest-o-Lite lamps installed on virtually every truck and car built in the United States. He forged friendships with other local entrepreneurs and recruited three of them to be his partners in this

new venture. James Allison, Arthur Newby, and Frank Wheeler signed on, invested their money with Carl and soon formed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Company. They purchased a 240 acre farm a few miles northwest of Indianapolis and later expanded it to include the 530 acre property it is today.

James Allison, the inventor of the Allison Perfection Fountain Pen, met Carl Fisher through their mutual interest in the bicycle craze. Together they formed the ZigZag bicycle club. Later they joined as partners in the Prest-o-Lite venture. James Allison then formed the Indianapolis Speedway Team Company, which evolved into the Allison Engine Company that is now the Allison Transmission Company of General Motors. Rolls Royce acquired the engine building division of Allisons in 1995.

Arthur Newby was the president of National Motor Vehicle Company, located in Indianapolis. His company began its venture by manufacturing electric automobiles. Though the Company faltered in 1924, it managed to produce the winning entry for the 1912 Indianapolis Motor Speedway, before closing its doors forever.

Frank Wheeler, the fourth founding member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was a partner in the Wheeler-Schebler Carburetor Company, which manufactured carburetors for automobile manufactures throughout the United States. Frank Wheeler and his partner George Schebler commissioned the Wheeler-Schebler Trophy, which was the first trophy presented to winners of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, and the predecessor of the Borg Warner Trophy.

The farm they purchased, known by the locals as the Pressley Farm, sat near the corner of Crawfordsville Pike (now known as 16th St.) and Georgetown Rd, five miles west of downtown Indianapolis. However, another farmer named Levi Munter owned 80 acres, which sat directly on the corner of what is now 16th and Georgetown Road. The Fisher partners purchased an option on the 80 acres in December 1908 and exercised the option sometime shortly after filing their articles of incorporation for the new Indianapolis Motor Speedway Company on March 20, 1909.

In the spring of 1909, the land around the speedway was largely pasture land, but a few factories, situated just south of the site of the new Indianapolis Motor Speedway, had been in operation for several years prior. Those factories included the Prest-o-Lite company built and operated by Carl Fisher. James Allison's machine shop was also located just south of the site of the new speedway. The Allison machine shop that later became the Allison transmission and engine company is still in operation at or near the same location today. The town of Speedway was founded in 1926 and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway now sits entirely within the city limits of Speedway, Indiana.

Automobile racing was not popular at that time. Building a race course for the sake of holding automobile races, was not Carl Fisher's plan. His plan was to build a testing ground for American automobile manufacturers to test their machines and make them faster and more reliable. The races he organized in 1909 were part of his plan to promote the track and encourage automobile makers to take up the challenge. Better cars meant happy buyers which in turn brought about enthusiastic sales. Carl Fisher and his partners were perhaps better able to benefit from the anticipated boom of automobile sales than any other persons in the world. With the first automobile dealership and a manufacturing plant that made running lights for virtually every automobile made in the United States at that time, Carl Fisher was poised to make an enormous fortune.

Since 1911 when the first Indianapolis 500 mile race was run, many stories turned to legend and helped insure that the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be recorded for posterity. Flamboyant drivers, owners and mechanics came to Indianapolis to compete for the prize of fortune and fame. Some have faded into the pages of history despite risking their life, fortunes and reputations and are these days nothing more than a footnote in history. Others, however, made their mark though success or tragedy and are memorialized on the pages of historical books, photographs and film.

There is perhaps no race driver in history who did more to capture the attention and admiration of the world, than Barney Oldfield. Born Berna Eli Oldfield, in 1878 near Waseon, Ohio, Barney started his racing career by competing in bicycle races across the country. He transitioned to automobile racing by joining a friend and fellow racer Tom Cooper in a racing venture, which sprang from a short interlude with future automobile titan, Henry Ford. Ford, who's two prototype cars were difficult to start, sold both of his cars to Cooper for 0.00. Cooper put Oldfield behind the wheel and entered the car in the 1902 Manufacturer's Challenge Cup. When Oldfield beat Alexander Winton, the defending champ and odds on favorite by more than a half mile in a car built by Henry Ford, both men were catapulted into automobile history. Oldfield became synonymous with speed and Ford got the financial backing he needed to start his automobile manufacturing company. Barney Oldfield was the first man to break the 60 mile per hour barrier in a mile run at the Indianapolis State Fair Grounds a few years later. He raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1914 and 1916, finishing 5th in both races. He never won the Indy 500, but he became a close friend and business associate of Carl Fisher.

For many years, motorcycle cops around the country, were fond of asking "who in the hell do you think you are, Barney Oldfield?", when stopping motorists for exceeding the speed limit. Oldfield, with his trademark cigar and thick black mustache, was one of the most celebrated drivers in the early years at the Indianapolis 500. His barnstorming thrill shows and record setting speed exploits also helped give international prominence to the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

Indianapolis 500 Auto Racing Theme Party Country Western Style

The average Indianapolis 500 party is either held as a theme for someone's birthday or as a pre-race event before and sometimes during and after the big race. However you can add a dash of country western style and make the party even more interesting and fun, because an additional theme adds a plethora of new activities for guests. Why not open up a dance floor and blast out some good ole' country music for the guests to dance too? Doing the electric slide sure builds up an appetite and the guests will be craving your delicious BBQ. Of course any party with a country western twist and Indianapolis 500 fans need to have some great BBQ.

indianapolis 500 evolution

For the menu try cooking up some western style spare ribs on the grill. Baked beans are easy to open and add a little beer to for flavor. Mashed taters fit the bill for filling treats, but you may need to make up some gravy for them. If you just want to serve up some appetizers try putting out a large tray of Nachos, western style, with pulled BBQ beef, lettuce and extra sharp cheddar cheese.

INDIANAPOLIS

To decorate your Indianapolis 500 party you can add a mix of both themes. Use the Indianapolis 500 paper goods, such as napkins and plates and try putting up some wall hangings of racecars and driving teams related posters. You can also pick up some inflatable guitars and country boots to blow up and leave around the room. Play that country music in the background to add to the atmosphere and greet your guests in a cowboy hat and boots for fun. Cheap cowboy hats bought in bulk can make for great party favors to give to the guests.

For entertainment there's food, line dancing competitions, poker, Texas Holdem and of course the Indianapolis 500.

Become a Mortgage Broker in Indiana - Indianapolis Mortgage Broker Information

You probably read the title of this article wondering why you would want to become a mortgage broker in Indiana? Or you might already have a great reason to become a mortgage broker and you are searching for information on how to become a mortgage broker.

indianapolis 500 evolution

I am going to give you my top 5 reasons to become a mortgage broker no matter where you are, and I will explain why Indiana is such a great choice for mortgage brokers.

INDIANAPOLIS

Reason #1 - The mortgage business is very lucrative

Think about it this way, a loan officer can make a six figure income each year, easily. If you have 4-6 of them working for you and they make six figures a year, think about what type of money you would be making. In order to make six figures as a loan officer you have to close 10-15 loans a month and create revenue for your company of about double what you make. That translates into an income for you, the broker, of over a half million dollars a year, not to shabby.

Reason #2 - The mortgage industry will never go away

The only way the mortgage industry will disappear is if, somehow, everybody can afford to pay cash for their homes. That will never happen. We will always need houses and we will always need financing to buy those houses. This is pretty good job security, don't you think?

Reason #3 - The mortgage industry only requires 40 hours of work a week

If you set up your business correctly you can offer your loan officers a lot of freedom to come and go as they please. Plus you can do the same. There is no reason for you to be open more than 5 days a week for 40 hours total. This means no overtime and no weekends of work. You can spend that time with your family where you belong.

Reason #4 - Your advertising is simple and can be done by a third party or yourself

All you have to do to advertise is design a letter that is written to your potential customers. Then, you purchase a mailing list of homeowners in your area and send it out. Instruct your prospects to call your office if they are interested and then, sell the leads on one of your programs from one of your lenders.

I worked for a mortgage broker for 4 months and this is all they did. I sold more loans for them than I did for anybody else, and I never had to do any telemarketing at all. Loan officers will find their own referrals and lead if you don't make them do any cold calling. You can also purchase leads online for a good price and sell those.

Reason #5 - You are able to help people with good or bad credit and you get a sense of pride from helping others

As humans we get a certain sense of joy from helping others. The thank you letters, hugs, and compliments you will get when you turn someone's financial life around or help them buy their first house will amaze you. Sometimes this is enough and the money is just extra. This is by far the best reason to become a mortgage broker and the most rewarding

Now, why would I pick Indiana for my new mortgage broker business? Indiana is not flooded with mortgage brokers yet, which means the competition is not too crazy. Another great reason is because Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute, and Muncie are all growing and so are the smaller cities around those areas.

There are also a lot of rural areas in Indiana, which means that if you can specialize in rural loans you can really enter into a niche market. It is very hard to get a good loan in a rural area because so many loan officers and mortgage brokers don't try hard enough to make these loans happen.

Now you have all my reasons for becoming a mortgage broker, and you have my choice for where I would open up at. Use this information along with some mortgage training and you will be well on your way to a new and very lucrative business.

Rev Up Your Appetite for an Indianapolis 500 Party

With over 85 years of history, the Indianapolis 500 is the granddaddy of American racing. What would an Indianapolis 500 party be without an Indianapolis 500 menu. Give guests a multi-course menu to take their appetites from pace laps, through the excitement of the race to the thrill of victory.

indianapolis 500 evolution

Use racing terms for your Indianapolis 500 menu to keep all aspects of the party focused on this great American spectacle. Start Indianapolis 500 party guests off with a Green Flag Salad of field greens, tomatoes, red onion and a selection of dressings. For a main course, bratwursts, hamburgers and hot dogs can easily be prepared on the grill and wrapped in foil to evoke the feeling of being at the track. Throughout the day, beer, soft drinks and even fresh squeezed Lemon shakeups keep that "at-the-track" feeling alive.

INDIANAPOLIS

For dessert, keep the Indianapolis 500 menu rolling onto Victory Lane with a checkered flag cake. While this may sound complicated, it doesn't need to be. The basic layout is a three layer round cake. Start with a 9-inch round cake pan. Center a 6-inch round pan inside the 9-inch pan. Center a 3-inch pan or ramekin inside the 6-inch pan. Fill the center and outer pans with chocolate cake batter and the middle ring with white cake batter and bake according to directions. Do this twice and reverse the color pattern once. Stack the layers so that chocolate is over white and vice versa. Frost the cake and when cut, your guests receive a piece of the checkered flag! Serve with cold milk just like the Indianapolis 500 winner drinks.

With planning, an Indianapolis 500 menu can be even better than being at the big race.

Indianapolis Wines Show There Is More to the State than Just Sport

Indianapolis is renowned for several things, especially its sporting heritage, from the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall Of Fame Museum where you can tour the famous race track through to the Pacers basketball team and the Colts Football team. Until recently, however, it has not been widely recognized for its many wineries. The opening of the Gaia Wines Contemporary Winery in 1996 has sought to change this state of affairs, bringing the art of the winemaker squarely to the Indiana area.

As Indiana's 19th winery, Gaia has needed to fit in to its surroundings, whilst creating its own niche in the marketplace. Nestled centrally in the up market historic gallery and theater district on Massachusetts Avenue, just 2 minutes walk from the exclusive luxury Conrad Hotel, the company has needed to quickly gain a high class reputation in order to suitably fit into the area. In the short time since it set up, Indiana's newest winery has succeeded spectacularly by managing to create 14 new award winning wines, introducing tours, wine tasting, as well as providing meeting rooms and hosting private functions.

CNA CLASSES IN INDIANAPOLIS

Gaia Wines is owned and run by Angee Walberry and Margaret Broderick, making it the only solely woman-owned winery in the United States, and upholds an ideal to provide an enjoyable and educational winery experience within a contemporary, urban environment.

Margaret Broderick believes, "If we, as a winery, are going to succeed it is vital that we educate and make more Americans aware of the benefits and pleasures of wine."

With gifts and accessories, wine appreciation classes, and additional entertainment such as Sunday Jazz and comedy shows, as well as monthly specials, this small winery fits nicely into the growing wine tasting scene which has begun to emerge over the past few years.

Other highly recommended wineries worth visiting in Indiana include the Chateau Thomas Winery and the Easley Winery, with both offering free tasting sessions and regular guided tours, as well as meeting rooms, events and activities.

Although often not widely recognised outside the state, the Indiana soil and climate provide great growing wine conditions, especially for the ever popular and dependable Cabernet Sauvignon grape varietal. The strength of these wines has however now gradually started to be noted by the wider vintner community, with the Easley Winery recently receiving a well deserved Gold Medal for their lively Cabernet "packed with fruity overtones and black currant aromas", although some of their sweet blush wines are also definitely worth a taste to see what the region can truly provide in the way of rich vibrant tastes.

Though it may not currently be as widely regarded as California's Napa Valley for the consistent quantity, quality and depth of the wines produced, Indiana is certainly an up and coming region with some forward looking producers, who are managing to create some interesting wines which deserve to be taken seriously, and are well worth visiting if you get the chance.

Car Insurance Guidelines For Indianapolis, Indiana

Facts about Indianapolis Car Insurance

indianapolis motor speedway

Indianapolis insurance falls under the legal requirements instituted by the state of Indiana. Indiana's minimum requirements for liability insurance are ,000 for uninsured motorist coverage, ,000 for Property Damage Liability, and ,000 for underinsured motorist coverage.

INDIANAPOLIS

Voluntary types of coverage available in Indianapolis include medical payments, collision, comprehensive, towing and car rental. Though collision coverage is not required legally by the state of Indiana, it is often required by the lender if you still owe a balance on your automobile loan.

Though Indiana's Department of Insurance does not "fix" rates, it does require every auto insurance provider to file the rates and forms with the Department before implementing them. The Department examines each company's intentions to ensure consumers are getting car insurance at a fair price. The Department also requires that rates be open for public inspection. This benefits you because you can compare rates from numerous providers in Indianapolis without making a commitment to purchase.

Determining Rates

Indianapolis providers use a number of factors when determining your car insurance premium. These include (but are not limited to) gender and age, marital status, type of automobile, place of residence, financial credit scores, daily commute distance, driving record, driver training (if you have completed a driver's course), history of automobile claims, and the deductible and type of coverage chosen.

Insurance companies combine these factors with general statistics, a process that helps the provider come to reasonable conclusions about the amount of risk each driver poses. Indianapolis statistics about drivers, cars and highways are readily available so you can see how your area fares in the eyes of insurers. For example, the average daily commute in Indianapolis is 22.7 minutes. The city reported 70 fatal automobile crashes in 2007, which involved 174 people and 114 automobiles. Indianapolis had an estimated 7,680 car thefts that same year. You can research statistics such as these and find lists of the most stolen cars in Indianapolis as well as the safest cars to drive.

As you research auto insurance companies in Indianapolis, be sure to compare the rates based on the following criteria:

*Does the policy provide adequate coverage?

*Can you lower your premium by raising your deductible?

*Does the company offer discounts for student drivers (good grades and training), a good driving history, safety features on your vehicle, etc.?

*Can you depend on the company when you need to file a claim?

*How is the company rated financially? (Use A. M. Best Rating Service and others to find out.)

*Will insuring your vehicle and home with the same company save you money?

*Can you lower your premium by implementing anti-theft devices or by parking your car in a locked garage versus on the street?

Ask these questions about each provider so you can make an informed decision. Lower price is not always best if it means sacrificing the quality of service you receive. Indiana's average car insurance premium is ,715 per year (as of 2009). This is right in tune with the national average of ,735. But with online auto insurance comparisons, you might be able to get even better rates. Use these guidelines to start your search for affordable car insurance in Indianapolis today.

The Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade Tips

The 500 Festival Parade

indianapolis 500 hats

Held on the Saturday immediately prior to the 500 Mile Race, electrifies the streets of downtown Indianapolis as the stars of Indy join with other celebrities from around the country and around the world to celebrate the worlds greatest spectacle in racing. This parade has been an annual event in Indianapolis since 1957.

INDIANAPOLIS

The 500 Festival Parade features balloons of famous cartoon characters, marching bands, dance troupes, themed floats, 33 Indy 500 festival princesses, popular celebrities, and the fearless young racers, of course. Watch for your favorite movie star or music artist. See and be seen. On the Saturday before the worlds most famous auto race, this is the place to be. The event will also be televised on Indianapolis WISH TV-8.

The atmosphere is family friendly by design. The organizers of the parade are always sure to provide entertainment the whole family can enjoy, especially the younger fans. The parade starts at noon, but be sure to get there early as this event is expected to draw more than 300,000 fans and if you haven't purchased a reserved seat, the free curbside viewing venues are finders keepers.

Former Grand Marshals include Jimmy Stewart, President, Walter Cronkite, Gerald Ford, Vice President Dan Quayle, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The Grand Marshal for the 2010 parade is expected to be announced on or about May 1, 2010.

The parade route begins at the intersection of Pennsylvania and North streets, runs south to Washington Street, turns right (West) on Washington Street for one block to Meridian Street, turns right (North) and continues to 11th street where the parade route ends. Streets will be closed the morning of the parade from Illinois on the West to Delaware on the East, and from 16th Street on the North to Washington Street on the South. The streets begin closing at 6:00 A.M., so plan your route carefully to avoid these areas. Bleachers and reserved seating are available and secured by the purchase of a ticket. Tickets for adults can be purchased for .00 for reserved chairs or .50 for reserved bleacher seats. Special accommodations for wheel chairs can be provided, if arranged at the time you order your tickets.

Tips that you may fine helpful:

1. Purchase tickets for the parade in advance. Unlike most parades, the Indy 500 Festival Parade requires tickets. These are easily available through many online ticket outlets and this event regularly sells out.

2. Make travel plans to get to Indianapolis. If you are lucky enough to live within driving distance of the city, it will be easier for you. If you have to fly, make your reservations as early as possible, as this is the busiest weekend for Indy and most flights sell out. If you can't get a flight, check flights to nearby airports like Louisville and Chicago.

3. Secure a hotel room early. Just like the flights, hotels in the Indianapolis area will be just as scarce. The closer to the track you try to find a room, the harder it will be. Be prepared to drive a little bit to get to the festival.

4. Be sure to arrive early on parade day. Round up your family early and scout out a front row seat to watch the festivities. It is recommended that you arrive several hours before the start of the parade. Which brings us to...

5. Bring lawn chairs and some snacks. Don't forget water. Indianapolis usually has great weather this time of year and the time before the parade offers fantastic people watching. Once you have a spot, make yourself comfortable and wait for the action.

Week 9 - Indianapolis Colts and the Philadephia Eagles and Mini Reviews of the Rest

Michael Vic played liked his did before he injured his ribs. He was awesome. This was probably his best performance because it came against one of the fastest defense lines and linebackers in the league. Although the Colts do play faster on their faux turf at home. They are still plenty fast on grass. Vic made them look slow at times. Vic spun out of several sack situations for most mortals and his forty yard run reminded people he can still be the human joy stick when he has too. Vic also showed arm strength with his a flick or his wrist and touch. His fifty yard laser strike to DeSean Jackson from his own end zone with a thing of beauty. He couldn't have handed it to him better than that. Vic also did not turn the ball over which is huge against a team that creates turnovers by nature. Vic would be the NFL's most valuable player halfway through the season, even with the missed games.

indianapolis motor speedway

Vic's effort alone was not the reason the Eagles won. Their much maligned defense pressured Manning sacking him three times, which is rare. They forced two interceptions which also is rare. They even confused him with changing their blitz look and making him audible into running plays that was stuffed. That never happens. Their defense gave up yards but tackled well and limited the run after catch yards. They even overcame a couple of suspect penalties. The shoulder hit that safety Kurt Coleman made on Colt receiver Austin Collie which knocked Collie out was about as textbook as you can get, yet was ruled a personal foul. It should have been a no call and actually a fumble. Coleman should appeal the upcoming fine. Also Trent Coles hit on Manning on 4th and eighteen. I know that you can't hit the quarterback in head, especially Payton Manning, but Cole was going for the ball, missed and glazed Manning's head. Manning was about to go down anyway and the game would have been over at that point. The Eagle defense hasn't played this well since Jim Johnson was their defensive coordinator.

INDIANAPOLIS

Oakland over Kansas City. Jason Campbell was fantastic in the fourth quarter after being held in the check for most of the game. Before this year that would have been an automatic loss for the Raiders, but Campbell came through. His biggest and best pass was the fourth down throw to Jacoby Ford who made a better catch by basically taking the ball from the Chief defensive back. Ford's kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half ignited the Raiders and the Raider crowd got them back into the game. Ford has defiantly earned more playing time. The Chiefs played well for most the game, but could not apply the knockout blow. They are very young and will learn from this loss. The rematch in Kansas City will tell who wins the division.

New York Jets edging Detroit. Nick Folk game tying and game winning kicks were clutch but Mark Sanchez willed the Jets to victory. Another tough loss for the Lions who play hard each week but can't seem to close. They are an amazing 7-1 versus the point spread.

San Diego edging Houston. Phillip Rivers has to be the most underrated quarterback in the league. He won without all his top receivers. The Chargers are making their midseason push again. The Texans are cursed to be 8-8 again.

Baltimore defeating Miami. The Ravens style is too just slowly grind teams in submission. The Dolphins were unbeaten on the road until this game. They should have stayed at the Holiday Inn again.

Chicago beats Buffalo. Jay Cutler was only sacked one time in the win and threw two touchdown passes. He must have had flashbacks of being in Denver. Buffalo loses another close game. It may be time for the team to meet with Dr. Phil.

Cleveland running all over New England. Peyton Hillis runs like a bull with nifty moves. He and Colt McCoy have made the Browns future look bright. New England's defense played as soft as marshmallows. The post game hand shake between Belichick and Mangini was about as cold as a handshake between German and Russian generals during the battle of Stalingrad.

Atlanta edges Tampa Bay. The Falcons win with a goal line stand the end of the game. Tampa Bay is petitioning the NFL to be placed in the NFC west so they make the playoffs.

Minnesota edges Arizona. Brett Farve saves the Vikings season and Coach Childress job with another Brett Farve in his prime performance. Childress should stay away humor in his post game press conference. He was begging for even a courtesy laugh. Arizona needs Donovan McNabb and forty-five hugs.

New Orleans whips Carolina. The Saints have discovered it's good to have a scrimmage in the middle of the season. The Panthers are wishing Dallas was on their schedule so they can win another game.

New York Giants slapping Seattle. The Giants were dominating in every phase of the game. The best pass thrown by Seattle was the fan who threw the beer at Steve Smith after a touchdown.

Green Bay routing Dallas. The Packers did whatever they wanted against the Cowboys because the Cowboys quit at the coin flip again. Now Cowboy fans can focus on the East Dillion Lions who have a good chance to win state and Head Coach Eric Taylor whose contract expires at the end of the year.

The Indianapolis 500

One of the largest single-day sporting event in history is the Indy 500. The running of the Indy 500 has been going on since 1911. The 93rd running of the race will take place in May of 2009, making it the 64th consecutive year without interruption. Other names of the race throughout history have been the International 500-Mile Sweepstakes (twice), the International 300-Mile Sweepstakes and the Liberty Sweepstakes. The race has been carried on television and radio. It debuted on radio in 1952 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. The firs time the race was televised from start to finish was in 1986 by ABC.

indianapolis

The race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was built in 1909. Its first track was a gravel and tar track which was then changed to all brick and then pavement. The first Indy 500 took place on May 30, 1911. The venue currently holds approximately 400,000 people. The first race was seen by just over 80,000 people who paid for admission. The first race included Ray Harroun, the inventor of the rear view mirror. The race was originally an open event which meant that anyone could race in the event if they wished to do so. Now the race is by invitation only. Drivers must qualify for participating in the event.

INDIANAPOLIS

When the race was an open event the qualifying procedure entailed the admission fee and maintained a certain speed was allowed to join the field. The order of start was determined at random, by determining who handed in their signup forms first. Now the qualifying, since it is by invitation only, is a little tougher. The current speed-based qualifying was started in 1915 and the field was limited to 33 entries, which is still the case for today's race. The qualifying process today consists of a four-lap distance and it was introduced in the year 1933.

With each race comes traditions at the Indy 500 from year to year. The most popular tradition, and most popular words in sports aside from "Play Ball," is "Gentlemen, start your engines!" Other traditions include the detonation of an explosive to signal the opening of the arena's gates at 6am on the day of the race, "Taps" is played to symbolize the remembrance of Memorial Day along with a flyover, "God Bless America" is performed by Florence Henderson and "The Star-Spangled Banner" is performed by a different popular artist each year.

There have been a multitude of accidents during the running of the Indy 500 and a handful of deaths involving drivers, crew, spectators and driving mechanics (which haven't been used since the early years of the race). The last death during the Indy 500 was in 1973 when Swede Savage died on July 2nd in a hospital from injuries suffered in the race. Some believe that Savage might have died do to contaminated blood from a transfusion. Savage was the 14th driver to die either at the race or after the race to due injuries from an accident or from heat exhaustion.

Indianapolis Visitors Guide & City Info

Within the Indianapolis metro area there are distinct districts within the city to include: Broad Ripple Village, Fountain Square, The Wholesale District, White River State Park and the Indiana Avenue. These neighborhoods are central features of the heart of Indianapolis, Indiana.

indianapolis 500 evolution

Broad Ripple Village is located just north of downtown Indianapolis and is known for its artistic culture. The Annual Broad Ripple Art Fair, sponsored by the Indianapolis Art Center, is attended by many patrons every spring. This area is also attracts many young twenty-something's enjoying the abundant nightlife. Massachusetts Avenue, or what locals refer to as "Mass Ave", is located in downtown Indianapolis and is likened to Broad Ripple Village for the downtown dweller. Some of the top restaurants in the city are on this simple diagonal street just northeast of the downtown circle.

INDIANAPOLIS

Fountain Square and the Wholesale District are also located downtown, though they are just south of the city. Indianapolis city planners chose to revitalize both of these areas in the 1990s and since then residents have seen more restaurants, art galleries and condominiums erected. Such unique restaurants as Iria's, which serves amazing Italian food with Duckpin bowling in the basement, have helped Fountain Square become once again one of Indianapolis' most beloved districts. The Wholesale District also contains Lucas Oil Stadium and Conseco Fieldhouse, making it a premier destination for sporting and special events.

The White River State Park covers 250 acres just west of downtown Indianapolis. It is considered America's only urban cultural state park and is surrounded by the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. White River Park is also a great place for many outdoor concerts in the summer and is adjacent to the canal, which attracts many running enthusiasts during the warmer months.

Indiana Avenue was once an African American cultural center of Indianapolis. Many historical figures have their roots in this district, such as Madam C.J. Walker. During the 1970s the area experienced much urban decay and it wasn't until the 1980s that the city began demolishing most of the worn-down buildings. Today the area still has a few historic buildings, including the Madame C.J. Walker Building, which hosts many performing arts events.

All of these areas combine to give Indianapolis a rich culture and a history that the residents are proud to uphold. In addition, they attract many tourists and help boost the economy of Indianapolis.

2008 Indianapolis Colts Draft Report

The 2008 Indianapolis Colts season is the team's 56th season in the NFL. They will be attempting to improve upon their 13-3 score from 2007, which is little to be improved on, except that they hope to repeat their impressive season score but this time win the divisional round, playoffs and Super Bowl. Perhaps the team was still shaky playing at their new venue of the Lucas Oil Stadium. (Perhaps Peyton Manning slipped on a spill?) Nevertheless, fans remain excited about the 2008 draft pick.

This year the Colts chose the following players to join the dominant NFL team: center Mike Pollak from Arizona, linebacker Phililp Wheeler from Georgia, tight end Jacon Tamme from Kentucky, linebacker Marcus Howard from Georgia, tight end Tom Santi of Virginia, center Steve Justice of Wake Forest, running back Mike Hart, wide receiver Pierre Garcon from Mount Union and center Jamey Richard of Buffalo. How did these draft picks go over with NFL fans?

INDIANAPOLIS

Mike Pollak has been seen as a productive choice as a center guard, a necessity because of the shortage of starting guards and one that could fit in admirably with the rest of the Colts team. Philip Wheeler was well reviewed, as he is predicted to perform well in zone playing given his agility. On the other hand, he has been questioned for his abilities in one-on-one coverage. Marcus Howard may be smaller than the average linebacker but he has received rave reviews for his game play and experience. Tom Santi received mixed reviews, as he obviously has the size for success but may be limited to blocking or goal line situations. Some question why he was chosen, while others remain confident that he filled an important position.

Steven Justice received generally high marks and without great risk. Operating a low profile at first, he will be groomed for success and eventually fit into the Colts for the long term. Mike Hart was responsible for some impressive feats in college, though he is relatively small in comparison to other players and not lightning fast. He remains untested at a college level for catching and blocking, so it remains to be seen how he will respond to hard interaction as a center. Pierre Garcon also divides fans as his offense remains untested, and his height is below average. However, at the amateur level he managed over 60 catches, 1000 yards and 15 touchdowns. That leaves Jamey Richard as the last pick, a top talent at the University at Buffalo, weighing in at 300 pounds, standing 6'4. He could be a welcomed center.

Will these draft picks help to bring the Colts back to Super Bowl victory? Critics pointed to the team's defensive problems as well as the need for a stronger cornerback team. However, the draft picks of 2008 have many buzzing about the Colts' chances this season, not to mention consistently great performances by returning players like Anthony Gonzalez and Peyton Manning. The Indianapolis Colts are still a favorite to win the Super Bowl in the early rankings, so don't bet against them!

Peyton Manning - Indianapolis Colts Quarterback

Born in New Orleans on March 24, 1976, Peyton Manning is the son of legendary New Orleans quarterback Archie Manning and Olivia Manning. While Peyton attended high school, Archie was the color commentator for the New Orleans Saints radio station. As a youngster, Peyton would occasionally visit off-season practices with his dad. On one occasion, then Saints coach Jim Mora, allowed Peyton to work out and toss some passes to the Saints receivers. Even more unbelievable than a high school student practicing with NFL receivers is the fact that he fit in perfectly at such a young age. While attending Isidore Newman High School, Manning served as quarterback during all 3 years. At the end of his senior season, Peyton Manning was the top recruited quarterback in the nation and was named as the Gatorade Circle of Champions National Player of the Year.

Following high school graduation, Manning decided to attend the University of Tennessee where he, once again, became a star quarterback for the team. While proving his skills on the field, Peyton Manning proved that he had equal skills in the classroom. Earning a BA in speech communication and graduating with honors was important to Manning, which is why he decided to put his football career on hold until he earned his degree.

As 1998 rolled around, Manning became a candidate for the NFL draft. The Indianapolis Colts welcomed Peyton Manning as their first pick in the draft and, as they say, the rest is history. Today, Peyton Manning is the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts where he has remained since his rookie season in the NFL.

On October 29, 2005, Manning's #16 University of Tennessee player number was retired as he, his mom, dad and wife were on hand along with a capacity crowd prior to the University of Tennessee Volunteers game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Everyone at Neyland Stadium watched as Manning's number was unveiled in the endzone. From 1994 to 1997, Peyton Manning played at the University of Tennessee where he broke nearly every passing record and led the team to 39 victories. Prior to the game, Peyton's PeyBack Foundation held a fundraiser, which raised over ,000.00 to be used for funding grants and events involving disadvantaged youth in Knoxville.

On Friday, February 3, 2006, Peyton Manning was recognized as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. This award was named in recognition of the legendary Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton, who passed away in 1999. This award is the only one in the league to recognize a player's off-the-field community service in addition to his playing excellence. Connie Payton, the wife of Walter Payton, proudly presented the award. Fans around the nation celebrate Manning's accomplishments and achievements in football and in life.
