CBSE Nine Point Grading System For Classes 9th and 10th From Current Academic Year 2009-2010

Introduction to grading system for class 10th exams, will take away board fear factor from students and their parents. We have seen students are always getting pressurized to perform better in board exams, at home from their parents and from teachers in school. This sometimes worked negatively for students and they loose their confidence level in studies. CBSE is implementing Nine Point Grading System for classes 9th and 10th from current academic year 2009 - 10 to make exams less stressful and learning more enjoyable for students of class 9th and 10th.

The grading of students would also take away the frightening judgmental quality of marks obtained in a test leading to a stress free and joyful learning environment in the school. This will also enable maintaining a meaningful continuity in the assessment pattern from the primary level to the secondary level and also in ensuring a basic uniformity in the schools. This system assessed student's performance using conventional numerical marking mode, and the same will be later converted into the grades on the basis of the pre-determined marks ranges as detailed below :-

This is going to help dropout rate as there will be less fear and anxiety related to performance. CBSE already declared that there will be no Class 10th board exams from next academic year 2011 for students studying in CBSE's Senior Secondary schools and who do not wish to move out of the CBSE system after Class 10th. However, such students of Senior Secondary Schools who wish to move out of the CBSE system after Class 10th exams will be required to take the Board's External (pen and paper written/online) Examination.

As board exams being made optional from next academic year 2010-2011, a new system of evaluation is introduced by CBSE called Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE). CCE comprises formative and summative assessment of the student to be done over two terms-first and second- during the year-long academic calendar.

Formative Assessment to evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work

There will be two evaluations each in the first and second terms Each evaluation will carry 10 marks a piece. Summative Assessment Based on the term-end examination

There will be one term-end exam for each term The first term-end exam will carry 20 marks The second term-end exam will carry 40 marks
