Many people don't know it but diesel has also been used to power aircraft engines in the past. The first diesel powered flight of a fixed wing aircraft took place in September 18, 1928 at the Packard Motor Company with Captain Lionel M. Wilson and Walter Lees on the controls. The aircraft was a Stinson SM1B X7654. It was the same aircraft that Charles Linbergh would fly to great fame later that year. In 1931, Walter Lees and Frederick Brossy set the nonstop flying record by flying a Bellanca powered by a Packard diesel engine for 84 hours and 32 mins. Even the great Hindenburg was powered by four large diesel engines. And that airship was one of the most legendary figures ever to take flight.
