Do I Need Flair Bartending Classes?

Welcome into the world of fast and furious pours, the world of flair bartending classes. One of the first men credited with flair bartending was Jerry "the professor" Thomas, and his fable drink, the Blue Blazer. The Blue Blazer is a simple flaming drink of scotch, water, and sugar poured back and forth between two mugs while still ablaze. If such flair seems a little beyond your skill level, don't worry. Everyone starts at the beginning.

Put simply there are two schools of flair. The first is called working flair and as such is a style promoting efficiency of movement and pours, minimal spillage and a service first mentality. Such bartending can help bartenders earn a few extra tips throughout the evening first by providing fast service and second by putting on a good show.

The second school of flair is known as exhibition flair. Exhibition flare often requires prior setup and staging. This allows for longer, choreographed sequences of flipping, juggling, pouring, lighting drinks and multi-flair tricks involving three, four, even five bottles or tins. While this does not lend itself to everyday bartending certain bars have independent flair sections for entertainment purposes. Exhibition flare also lends itself to bartending competitions for thousand dollar or more top prizes, and bragging rights, naturally.

Many instructional courses can be found online teaching free lessons on basic moves such as the palm spin or a bottle flip to stall (catching it on the back of your palm). In addition to free basic tutorials found on the internet a wide array of DVD materials is available. While free tutorials, practice and several broken bottles can net you the basics of flair certain schools specialize in training for bartending competitions. They teach a breakdown of the rules to maximize points, select music, how to create combos of three to five moves and how to cater to the crowds.

Other schools of bartending require direct, hands on training on the grounds that there is no substitute to time spent behind a bar. Many of these schools require no prior knowledge of flare or even a thorough knowledge of alcohol, but can train you into the art of service with a show. These are the benefits of flair bartending classes.
