Kids Dance Classes - Are They an Alternative to Team Sports?

Lots of parents enroll their little girls in ballet classes. Ballet is certainly one of the most popular kids dance classes. But some parents think dancing is only useful if the child wants to become a professional. They question the logic of letting their child dance, as opposed to letting them play a sport. Here are some things you should consider.

1. Dancing is a physical activity. It's not exactly the same as a sport. There's no ball to hit, bounce or kick. There's no need to hit anyone or run around in the hot sun. But dancing is a physical activity. If you're worried about your child getting exercise, don't be. Taking a dance class provides exercise as well.

CLASSES

The good news is your child is less likely to get hurt while performing in a studio. Professional dancers do get hurt. Sprained ankles, sore knees and aching backs are normal. But it's nothing like getting hit by a 300 pound linebacker.

2. Dancing is not all about winning. Some team sports can put too much emphasis on winning. For some kids, playing a sport becomes more about pulverizing the other team. The focus shifts from having fun to winning at all costs. In short, there's often a lot of pressure on kids who play team sports.

This isn't to say there's no pressure on kids who dance. They do have pressure. But they're normally not under as much pressure as the school quarterback or star basketball player. Allowing your child to study the arts might allow them to have more fun with their extracurricular activity. They won't have an entire school depending on them to win a championship.

This article isn't to imply that team sports are bad. It's just to let you know that there are alternatives to sports. Kids dance classes are a viable alternative to playing team sports. So don't get discouraged if your child has no desire to become an athlete. Dancing is fine for them too.

I've certainly been hurt as a dancer and I've seen dancers get hurt so it's not without it's own injuries. I think it really comes down to intent. In a sport like football, you're meant to thrash into one another. The intent can sometimes be wicked. In dance, the intent is breaking new ground or making new heights within art itself. Some of those things are certainly physically challenging, and yes, you could even be hurt. Either way, it's really about how you want to train your kid in the first place.
