Yoga at Work - What Are Corporate Yoga Classes?

Millions of workers spend their days in front of a computer. This type of working situation, while helpful for timely communication, is not ideal for our bodies. Sitting at a desk for eight hours a day can cause tension in the spine, rounding of the shoulders, stiffness in the neck and strained vision. It is not uncommon to see employees stretching at their desks, and recently, yoga has become a popular way to combat these ailments.

The purpose of doing yoga postures (asanas) is to stretch the body so it can sit still for an extended period of time. In fact, the word "asana" literally means "to be in a comfortable seat." While traditionally asanas are used to prepare the body for meditation, yoga can also help make the body more comfortable while sitting for extended periods of time at a computer or desk. From this idea, the concept of yoga at work was born!

Corporate yoga classes are a way for employees to stretch and de-stress right in the office. Classes usually take place in a boardroom or common space and are taught by a certified yoga instructor. A typical corporate yoga class runs for about an hour and includes asanas, breathing techniques (pranayama) and tips on how to reduce stress. Classes are designed for all experience levels, and the yoga instructor will usually provide all of the mats, blocks and accessories that are necessary. Employees can change into more comfortable clothing to participate in the class, or they can choose to wear the same clothes that they wore to work. The classes are very gentle and tailored to beginners.

With the popularity of corporate wellness programs in recent years, employers have realized that healthy employees are happier, more productive and more likely to come to work. In addition to promoting the health and comfort of employees, corporate yoga classes can reduce stress and tension between coworkers and form a bond of camaraderie in the office. Employees return to work refreshed, calm and focused.
